As well as many other projects

Global Impact has taken the initiative to start the Tree Seed Bank, a dedicated cause to preserve the forests of today for tomorrow. We have started to collect seed from the Hardwood and semi-hardwood forests of North America in an effort to regenerate the loss of forests from clear cutting and to educate the land owners to take the necessary steps to preserve our natural resources. We hope to extend our cause throughout the world.

Household Hazardous Waste

What Household hazardous waste is.

Antifreeze

Motor oil

Pesticides

Batteries( lead, Ni-cad, alkaline,)

Paint oil based

latex paint(is collected as HHW but technically is not considered HHW)

Mercury vapor lights (including fluorescent)

Photo processing chemicals

Explosives

Smoke detectors

Acids and or bases

Computer and TV monitors

Other Electronic components can have heavy metals such as mercury and nickel etc.

Household cleaners (drain cleaner, disinfectants, corrosives, anything that is listed on the label as toxic or hazardous)

Ways to reduce HHW

Buy less product, larger containers are no deal if only half is used.

Trade or give away unwanted, unused waste in properly labeled containers  to friends or neighbors.

Use less toxic cleaners such as Vinegar and or ammonia.

Buy quality electronic components that will last and not go into the landfill as quickly as a lower quality product might.

Use all the product rather than dispose of it. (use it as directed).

REUSE

Old Computers can be given to schools to refurbish and use.

Electronics such as radios and TVs can be donated to places like Goodwill, where they can be refurbished and either sold or given to needy.

antifreeze can be recycled by letting the dirt settle out and reuse by adding an additive to replenish its properties.

Alternatives to HHW

Vinegar can be used as mild cleanser.

Coffee ground can be used for scouring pans and other surfaces.

Citric acid will clean almost anything.

Global Impact is working with the WVDEP and the Mon county Solid Waste Authority to bring Morgantown area a one day drop off program. We are also working with the State and the Public service Commission to find a way to fund a permanent Household Hazardous Waste Facility to act as a regional facility to cover several counties in WV and potentially in Pennsylvania. Please contribute to help us in this endeavor.
